Intent

At St Peter's we believe that PE is essential to the academic, social, emotional, spiritual and physical development of all our children. An effective curriculum will improve children's confidence and raise their self-esteem, as well as enabling them to develop positive attitudes about maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The intent of our PE curriculum at St Peter's is to provide all children with high quality PE and sport provision. It is our vision for every pupil will succeed and achieve to their fullest potential as well as inspiring them to lead physically active lifestyles now, and for the rest of their lives. It will encourage good sportsmanship and team work skills. We also want children to become aware of and monitor their own health and be able to assess risks and be comfortable when making 'safe' risk choices.

At St Peter's, we use 'Twinkl Move' to support our learning in both key stage 1 and 2.

Implementation

All learning outcomes are taken from the National Curriculum schemes of work in order to ensure there is progression of skills throughout EYFS, KS1 and KS2. We use Cross Curricular-orienteering in ks2 ensuring learning is active and engaging.

Swimming is taught to the majority of children in KS2 by qualified swimming teachers from school at a local pool.

Children with long hair should have it tied back during PE and all jewellery must be removed by the child. If a child cannot remove their earrings as they have been pierced within 6 weeks, the parent must provide a plaster or tape to surround the earing and must be applied by the child themselves.

A risk assessment will be carried out prior to the lesson when facilities, apparatus and equipment is checked by the teacher or coach. When handling or setting up apparatus children must be supervised by an adult in order to ensure this is carried out safely. At St Peter's we conduct annual inspections of all our PE equipment.

Parents are invited to annual sporting events which involve the children, including our sports day. Throughout the year children are selected to represent the school in local sporting festivals and KCSP organised events where possible, parents are invited to attend to show their support.

School Sports Premium Funding

The Government provides each primary school throughout England with additional funding which is to be spent on improving the sports provision within schools. At St Peter's we believe a high quality PE curriculum should be an integral part of the whole school curriculum and one that staff, pupils and parents understand and can contribute to.  Our school recognises the values that a high quality PE and school sport curriculum gives pupils.

Sports Premium Document

The Impact of our PE teaching and learning can be seen in the work below

Our high quality PE and sports provision ensures that all children are given the opportunity to experience many different types of physical activities. They are able to partake in individual and team activities, enabling them to transfer these skills into the classroom and beyond. Children's well-being and inter-personal skills will have been developed through their PE lessons.
